Air Source Heat Pumps

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump (sometimes referred to as an air-to-water heat pump) transfers heat from the outside air to water. This in turn heats rooms in your home via radiators or underfloor heating. It can also heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your hot taps, showers, and baths.

Heat from the air is absorbed into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump, which raises the temperature and then transfers that heat to water.

Why would I want an air source heat pump?

There are several benefits of air source heat pumps:

  • Lower your energy bills: high efficiency – an air source heat pump can be over 300% more efficient than a standard gas boiler, potentially saving you money on your heating bills.
  • Reduce your energy use: unlike traditional boilers (which use fossil fuels), heat pumps use electricity. However, the heat energy delivered to your home is much more than the electrical energy used to power the system.
  • Financial help available: You can take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and get a grant of up to £7,500 for your air source heat pump installation. The scheme covers heat pump installations before the end of March 2028.
  • Neither the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for England and Wales nor loans and grants from Home Energy Scotland are means-tested.
  • Cut your carbon emissions: heat pumps are a low carbon heating source, meaning that your emissions are lower than if you were using a gas or oil boiler.

Heat Pump VAT relief

To support you with energy saving home improvements, the government has removed VAT on heat pumps, solar panels and insulation for the next 5 years (starting April 2022).  Prior to that there was a 5% VAT tax relief on these products.

HELP IS AT HAND

There are a number of grants and incentives available to help with the upfront cost of upgrading to a heat pump, and there is no VAT on heat pumps.

BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME - The government have increased its heat pump grant from £5,000 to £7,500!

When you install an air source heat pump we will apply for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on your behalf and subtract it from the cost of your installation. We work with you to ensure you qualify for the grant before we install your heat pump so you know how much you'll pay.

Starting May 2024, properties will be eligible for grants even if they have outstanding EPC insulation recommendations.

You may be eligible for an air source heat pump grant if:

  • you own the property where the heat pump would be installed (whether this is your home, a holiday let or a small commercial property)
  • you use an air source heat pump installer who's accredited by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)
  • you’re replacing an old fossil fuel or electric heating system with a renewable heating system, such as an air source heat pump
  • you are not replacing a heat pump or previous renewable system.
